Christopher Foster studies the manuscript culture and intellectual history of early China, focusing primarily on newly excavated texts from the Pre-Qin, Qin and Han periods. His dissertation explores the rediscovered Cang Jie Pian 蒼頡篇 primer as a lens for understanding textual production during the Western Han. Further topics of interest include bridging the disciplines of archaeology and history for the study of early China; Han editorial practices in shaping the transmitted classics; religious Daoism; modern forgeries of bamboo-strip manuscripts; and collecting fake Chinese Harry Potter books
