Donald Sturgeon

 

Donald Sturgeon received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Hong Kong in 2014, and has held appointments at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard since 2015. His research interests include issues of language, mind and knowledge in classical Chinese thought, and the application of digital methods to the study of pre-modern Chinese literature and language.

Since 2005, he has created and maintained the Chinese Text Project (https://ctext.org), an online digital library of pre-modern Chinese writing which attracts tens of thousands of visitors every day and is widely used in teaching and research worldwide. His current research projects include development of optical character recognition techniques for pre-modern Chinese materials, text mining of the historical Chinese corpus, and creation of digital infrastructures for Chinese studies. He teaches courses on the use of digital technology in Chinese studies and literary and historical research.
