Ryan Cook is a film scholar who specializes in Japanese cinema and literature. He is currently working on a manuscript that traces the cultural and intellectual contexts of cinema in postwar Japan, and how they responded to the changing media environment and the political upheavals of the 1960s. His previous publications include studies of historical film theory and criticism, of directorial oeuvres, and of film in relation to literature and museum arts.
Ryan received his B.A. from Cornell University, his M.A. from Georgetown University, and his Ph.D. from Yale University. He also studied at Waseda University in Tokyo.
