SangJae Lee

SangJae Lee studied Korean history in Seoul National University, with a focus on intellectual history of Chosŏn dynasty. His interest lies from the mid-nineteenth century to early twentieth century, the period which usually being defined as ‘transitional period’ from premodern to modern period in Korean history. He is focusing on the intellectual networks and interrelation between Korea, China, and Japan of that period, concerning the introduction and understanding of knowledge and achievements of the contemporary Western nations. By concentrating on discourses and translated knowledge distributed through publications and media, he is aiming to contribute to the mapping of modern East Asian intellectual topography.
