Emily Hui-Yen Huang
Interim Director of the Chinese Language Program (Spring 2019)
Emily Huang has been teaching in the Chinese Language Program (CLP) since 2001, first as a preceptor, then since 2009 as senior preceptor. She served as Acting Director in 2010-2011 while the department conducted a job search for a new CLP Director, then as Interim Director while Jennifer Li-chia Liu was on leave in the fall of 2013. As senior preceptor, Huang assists with program administration, serves as a mentor to junior CLP faculty, and teaches and coordinates Elementary and Intermediate Chinese for Advanced Beginners and intensive courses for heritage speakers. She also coordinates Chinese language courses taught at Harvard Summer School in Cambridge. Before coming to Harvard, Huang was the Academic Coordinator and Senior Lecturer in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at University of California at Irvine (1990-2001) and Lecturer of Chinese at Cornell University (1986-1990). In addition to her background in Chinese Literature from National Cheng-Chi University in Taiwan, she has taken multiple language pedagogy workshops at Middlebury, Cornell, Princeton and Stanford, and attended various professional conferences on Chinese language and linguistics around the world.
