After obtaining a Master’s degree in Japanese literature at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Leah Justin-Jinich entered the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations as a PhD student at Harvard University in 2016. Her dissertation explores the complex social and financial ties between “mad verse” (*kyōka*) poetry groups and artists of the commercial “Pictures of the Floating World” (*ukiyo-e*). In particular, she is examining paintings inscribed by the eminent poet and cultural figure Ōta Nanpo (1749–1823) brushed by the artists Kubo Shunman (1757–1820) and Chōbunsai Eishi (1756–1829).
