An examination of Shinto, emphasizing its concepts of deity (Kami), patterns of ritual and festival, shrines as religious and social institutions, relation to conservative politics and nationalism, and its contribution to contemporary culture. By the end of the course, students should be able to define and defend their understanding of Shinto, demonstrate mastery of basic terms and concepts, be familiar with a variety of ways in which Shinto is practiced, be able to identify and analyze Shinto elements in contemporary Japanese politics and culture, and be able to debate current political issues surrounding Shinto. |
