Ph.D. Candidate in Religion/Philosophy
Guttorm Gundersen

Guttorm Norberg Gundersen received his MPhil in East Asian Culture and History from the University of Oslo in his native country of Norway in 2017, where he wrote about Māra in Tiantai Zhiyi’s instructions on meditation. He is interested in traditions of meditation and self-cultivation in China, particularly within Buddhism, and the role doctrine and cosmology plays in shaping conceptions of success, divine and demonic interaction, aberration, heresy and more. He wants to draw on materials both reflective and formative, anecdotal and technical to paint a broader picture of religious practice in China. Affiliated with the Woodenfish Foundation since 2013, he has served as program director and lecturer for their monastic life program, and organized the 2017 Dunhuang Buddhist Studies Workshop.
