Ph.D. Candidate in East Asian Film & Media Studies

Menglan Chen is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Her research examines modern and contemporary imaging technologies and techniques at the intersection of artistic, technical, and epistemic practices. Her dissertation investigates how photography, as a technology of light, redefined what was visible, sensible, and knowable in modern China. Broader interests include modern and contemporary Chinese art and media culture, East Asian film history, global histories of photography, and the visual culture of science and knowledge production.
