Isaiah is a PhD student in Harvard’s History and East Asian Languages program. He received his BA from Yale College in 2021 and his AM from Harvard in 2023, where he wrote a thesis on the classical commentaries and political philosophy of the late Ming literatus and statesman Zhang Juzheng. His present research focuses on the institutional and legal history of late imperial China. In particular, he is interested in how the laws and courts of the Ming and Qing contributed to China’s particular development path, situating the empire’s economic history within its intellectual context. He is also interested in comparing Ming and Qing legal institutions with those of other early modern societies.
